This School was named for the Cattey Family who owned property adjacent to the
School, and for the fact that it was located just west of Vernon Junction. Vernon
Junction was named for the junction of two early railroads, the Cleveland,
Columbus, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis (which passed through Shelby),
and the Mansfield, Coldwater, and Lake Michigan.

An interesting bit of information came from an article in an 1877 issue of
the Shelby News. The district #3 school was referred to as the "French" school.
A speculation could be made that this name may have been another way of
referring to the French - descended Cattey Family who immigrated from the
Alsace, Lorraine, portion of France.....

The town was started not long after the M. C. & M railroad was completed.
At one point, there was a hotel, a depot building, several small stores combined
with a group of dwellings.

In the early years (early 1850s to early 1860s), the school directors in this district
were often Peter Mott, Solomon Mott and John McMahon (families shown on
the 1873 and 1896 maps above). Peter Mott was born in Germany, immigrated
to the US, and married Victorene Cattey, a daughter of Alexis and Katherine
Cattey. The Cattey family immigrated to this country from France.
Peter Mott died in 1862 and is resting in the Sacred Heart Cemetery,
in the Bethlehem Settlement, near Shelby, Ohio

John "Eugene" Cattey was elected to 3 year terms as a School District # 3 director.
He continued to serve the School District #3 through the 1890s.

By the early 1880's Clara V. Cattey began teaching in the District # 3 school
and continued to teach in this and other Sharon Twp. districts well into the
1890s. In late 1896, Bennett Cattey began teaching in District # 3 and continued
to serve in districts # 3 and # 6 into the early 1900s.
